Drama / Mystery, Released in 2008, Starring Angelina Jolie, Colm Feore, Amy Ryan

This is based on a true story.

In 1920’s Los Angeles, a single mother returns home from work one day to discover that her 9 year old son is missing. She reports the disappearance to the police and continues to search for him. Five months after the disappearance the police claim to have found her son and reunite them. When she insists that the boy brought to her is not her son the police dismiss her as just not recognizing the changes that the interim time has wrought upon the boy. She continues to insist that the boy given to her is not her son, and the chief of police has her committed to an asylum. In the mean time an officer is sent out to a run down ranch house to deal with a teen without legal status, only the boy tells a horrific tale of being forced to help his uncle kidnap and kill children, could one of those boys have been hers?

This was really good, it tells the story of an abuse of power in Los Angles Police Department in the era, as well as the heart-rending story of the young mother. It’s not something I would the kids watch, while it’s not bloody, it still has some very grisly images that would give all but the most stalwart child nightmares.
